French director Audrey Diwan, known for her new adaptation of "Emmanuelle," stated that the original film was rife with sexist stereotypes. She shared this in an interview with the publication "Gazeta.Ru."
The filmmaker compared her new movie to the controversial 1974 version. In her view, the main character in the older film was merely an object for the male characters surrounding her.
“The book is filled with unbearable remnants of the 50s, patriarchy. Although it is written by a woman in the first person. I restored Emmanuelle’s power, making her a subject. To tell the story of a woman who does not experience pleasure but seeks to find it,” Diwan stated.
The film "Emmanuelle" by director Audrey Diwan premiered in Russian cinemas on November 28.
It was previously reported that the iconic French director visited Moscow. He mentioned that he could not live in the Russian capital due to the cold.
