Volunteer units "Bars" in the border area have received howitzers, electronic warfare systems, and flamethrowers.

Volunteer units known as "Bars" have been equipped with howitzers, electronic warfare stations, flamethrowers, and all-terrain vehicles, announced Colonel General Evgeny Burdinsky, the head of the Main Organizational and Mobilization Directorate (GOMU) and deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia. Since the beginning of the special military operation (SMO), more than 45,000 individuals from various regions of the Federation have enlisted in these volunteer formations.

He added that units have been established in Crimea, Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk to neutralize threats in the Russian border regions from Ukraine, said Yevgeny Burdinsky in an interview with the magazine "Military Commissariats of Russia" (.pdf).

A mandatory condition for citizens' participation in volunteer units was to carry out tasks in their respective regions, Mr. Burdinsky noted.

The majority of volunteers signed contracts to remain in the mobilization reserve after participating in the special military operation, the Colonel General added.

In his view, the work carried out by the Main Organizational and Mobilization Directorate (GOMU) to form the "Bars" volunteer units can be compared in scale to the organization of the people's militia during the Great Patriotic War.
