Basic physics: Why you shouldn't extinguish gasoline fires with water.

Everyone, including young children, knows that water is a universal agent for extinguishing fires. However, this rule does not apply when it comes to gasoline—using water will only intensify the blaze.
Основы физики: почему нельзя гасить бензин водой.
Let's recall the school physics curriculum.

Gasoline is a highly flammable liquid, which is why smoking is strictly prohibited near gas stations and inside vehicles. A tiny spark coming into contact with gasoline can lead to an explosion and a serious fire. For this reason, every gas station and car should be equipped with fire extinguishers that contain a special foam instead of water.

Why doesn’t water extinguish burning gasoline?

By definition, combustion is a physicochemical process involving the interaction of a combustible material with an oxidizer, releasing heat. In this case, oxygen acts as the oxidizer, so to extinguish any fire, it is necessary to limit its supply. For instance, when extinguishing a wooden structure, pouring water generously is usually sufficient: it envelops the material and seeps inside, thereby lowering its temperature and reducing the flames.

However, gasoline does not get enveloped by water due to its lower density. It simply floats on top of the puddle and continues to burn.

And that is the least of what can happen. The fact is that when water comes into contact with fire, it turns into steam, which expands and can create explosive waves in a confined space. Additionally, gasoline can spread along with the water poured onto it, leading to an increased area of combustion.

How to extinguish burning gasoline

Limiting the supply of oxygen can be achieved through more effective and safer methods. The most popular method is using a fire extinguisher. There are three types:

  • foam — creates a foam structure that covers the burning surface and isolates it from oxygen;
  • carbon dioxide — replaces oxygen in the combustion area, thereby preventing the spread of fire;
  • powder — quickly suppresses the fire by creating a barrier between oxygen and the flammable liquid.

Moreover, a burning puddle of gasoline can be extinguished by covering it with sand, dirt, or clay, or by placing thick blankets, dense carpets, or tarpaulins over it.

What to do if gasoline catches fire

During an emergency, it is crucial for everyone to remember key safety measures:

  1. Do not attempt to extinguish a gasoline fire with water.
  2. Immediately evacuate the danger zone.
  3. Contact emergency services.
  4. If possible, close doors to slow the fire's spread.
  5. Do not try to use household methods for extinguishing if you are unsure of your actions.
