The head of the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) Vladislav Tretiak announced that the FHR has endorsed the nomination of Russian Minister of Sports Mikhail Degtyarev for the position of President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

“The nomination of Mikhail Degtyarev has received support from the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, as well as from experienced sports leaders like Vitaly Smirnov and Shamil Tarpishchev, along with several other sports federations. The Russian Hockey Federation backs this nomination; Degtyarev is a strong candidate for the head of the Russian Olympic Committee. Additionally, Degtyarev has substantial management experience. I believe that it is appropriate at this moment to entrust him with this high and responsible position and wish him success in his efforts for the benefit of the entire domestic sports sector,” Tretiak’s words were reported by TASS.

Previously, the nomination of Mikhail Degtyarev was put forward by Honorary IOC Member and Honorary President of the ROC Vitaly Smirnov, IOC Member and Head of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev, the Russian Football Union, the Russian Weightlifting Federation, the All-Russian Athletic Federation, and the Russian Speed Skating Union.

On November 13, the President of the ROC Stanislav Pozdnyakov resigned from his position, which he had held since May 2018. The Olympic Assembly, where a new president of the organization will be elected, is scheduled for December 13.
