Kirilienko on the challenges facing Samara: "I'm confident the club won't be disbanded."

The President of the Russian Basketball Federation (RBF), Andrey Kirilenko, stated in a comment to "Sports Express" that he has spoken with the governor of the Samara region regarding funding for professional sports in the area.

The President of the Russian Basketball Federation (RBF), Andrey Kirilenko, stated in a comment to “Sport-Express” that he has been in discussions with the governor of the Samara region regarding the funding of professional sports in the area.

— For several weeks, there have been talks about the difficult situation with professional clubs in the Samara region. Were there any discussions about the fate of BC “Samara” in the new funding configuration?

— We have talked with the governor of the Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, on this topic. There is currently no clarity on the new figures, but it is already evident that there will be reductions in funding for professional sports. On the other hand, there are qualified people in the regional leadership who have a deep understanding of basketball and have played it themselves. Therefore, I hope that BC “Samara” will not be disbanded. There is a significant structure tied to the club. In addition to the men’s and women’s teams in the top divisions of Russian basketball, they have teams in all youth tournaments and 3x3 basketball. This is a full-fledged structure, and I cannot believe that the governor does not see this. If they lose this well-established pyramid, it will be very sad for everyone.

— Can the RBF somehow assist in resolving this issue?

— We are fully engaged in this matter. I reiterate that we have spoken with the governor on this topic. However, in any case, this is an internal issue for the region. It is possible that state funding will decrease, but the regional leadership will help the club find sponsors and provide advice on how to seek alternative funding sources.

— This week, Olga Arteshina took over as the head of the local federation.

— I am very happy for her. We have had a good friendship for many years. For many years, Olga represented the Samara region at the highest level as a player. After her career ended, she opened her own school and is now trying her hand at a managerial position. She understands all the issues perfectly. Everything that is required from us, as the RBF, we will assist.

In the current season of the VTB United League regular championship, “Samara” has achieved four victories and suffered nine defeats. The team is currently in 10th place in the standings.
